ness of the importance of obstructive lesions of the proximal subclavian artery in the production of symptoms of cerebral ischemia. Since this is a form of cerebral vascular insufficiency readily improved or cured by surgery, it is imperative that the "steal" syndrome be suspected clinically and that appropriate diagnostic procedures be performed. Symptoms of brainstem ischemia coupled with brachial blood pressure inequality, subclavian bruit, and ipsilateral radial pulse delay as observed by Kesteloot and Houte,2 are the basic clinical criteria for selection of these patients for contrast procedures. Experiments in which chronic reversal of vertebral flow was created in dogs3' 4 suggested that plethysmographically recorded alterations in digital pulse contour, timing, and blood flow in the occluded extremity could be of diagnostic importance. The present studies, carried out on patients with symptomatic subclavian steal, amplify our previous findings in animals and demonstrate pulse delay and the decrease in pulse amplitude in the extremity distal to the subclavian occlusion. The clinically observed diminution or loss of radial pulse following exercise of the arm with subclavian stenosis or occlusion has been confirmed objectively. Furthermore, we have found a compensatory dilatation of cutaneous vascular bed on the side of the obstruc-

The Congenital Variety of the "subclavian Steal" Syndrome.

T HROMBOTIC occlusion of the subelavian artery in its intrathoracie portioln is common in atherosclerosis, but gangrene of the ipsilateral extremity is rare owing to the extensive collateral network connecting with the branches of the subelavian artery. The vertebral artery, which is the subelavian 's first and largest branch, is perhaps the most important channel directing collateral blood to ...

Subclavian Steal in Patients with Blalock-taussig Anastomosis.

ALTHOUGH the collateral anastomotic channels that occur secondary to obstruction of the first segment of the subclavian artery have received relatively little comment by anatomists, the participation by the vertebral artery in such instances has been mentioned.' Recently, the finding of retrograde flow from the vertebral artery on the side of an obstruction in the first part of the subclavian a...

Vertebral Grand Larceny.

THE "subelavian steal" is a clinical syndrome that has been described only recently.1-10 Patients so afflicted are usually elderly, with an atherosclerotic plaque blocking the left subclavian artery between the aortic arch and the origin of the left vertebral artery. The left vertebral artery carries blood in retrograde fashion, siphoning part of the brain's supply from the circle of Willis to ...

Right subclavian steal syndrome in a patient with aberrant right subclavian artery, common carotid trunk and hypoplastic left vertebral artery

Introduction: Subclavian steal syndrome refers to the reversal of vertebral blood flow in the setting of proximal subclavian or innominate artery severe stenosis or occlusion resulting in the symptoms of vertebrobasilar insufficiency related to exercise of the upper extremities. It is more common on the left side. Case report: We reported a case of subclavian steal syndrome on the right side in...
